I hope everyone had a very fun and safe New Year’s celebration!
Yes, I actually left the house.
In fact, I went to the ball drop in Time’s Square. I even made you a movie about it. You’re welcome.
Oh, was that NOT what you were expecting by the title? Well, you should know well enough by now that I am no party animal. Crowded places where people are basically required to wear adult underwear because you have to wait to be herded like cattle for hours? No thank you. Apparently the attendance at the Japanese ball drop was insane compared to years before, and that was really just a crowd of (mostly) Japanese tourist and residents milling about, saying “so many people are speaking Japanese!!” I am guilty of having said that at least twice.
No, no, I hung out on New Year’s Eve with my family. Unlike myself, my parents like to be timely. So much so, that we had king’s cake a little early. Okay, really it was because it’s hard to have a pastry from Eric Kayser in front of you and not eat it.
Sadly, there was no baby Jesus inside. No bean, either. Instead, a little tile came separately in the bag. I know. Kind of takes the fun out of carefully eating your cake so you don’t chip a tooth.
Since none of us were going to get the tile in our cake, we made the cake wear the King’s crown.
This was a very different New Year’s celebration than last years, but just as special. Being brought up in multiple cultures can leave you culturally confused, but one bright side is that you never run out of way to celebrate!
Regardless of if/how you celebrated and whether or not you’ve made any specific resolutions, it’s definitely a great time to sit and reflect on the direction that the year past took and your hopes of the direction of the year ahead. That being said, there will be some changes in the way that I will be running Kizzling Around. I’ve never been very good at having a set schedule for this blog, but did try to update daily when I had internet. However, when I was doing so, I often found myself rushing to post, if just to have something up that day. In 2013, I will decrease this to 1-2 times per week and work on increasing the quality of each post.
As always, thank you for following along. This blog would just be me mumbling to myself if it weren’t for my amazing audience!

Hah! I loved your twist on the Times Square ball drop - totally fell for the gag! Good thing you gave the actual one a miss, it would have taken forever just to get in and get out again. That king’s cake looks totally delicious, I can just imagine the warm, almondy goodness within! Happy New Year Erica!
Haha thanks. I like to be tricky like that. Apparently we could have seen the fireworks from our roof. I should have gone, but it’s so cold that I wimped away from it. Kind of regret it now, but oh well. It was amazing. We actually got one from another bakery (Financier), but that one had more of an almond custard filling. They were both good, but I think I liked the first one better.
Yup, I fell for it, too
Aaaand that pastry/cake thing looks ridiculously incredible. I’m glad you found my blog the other day, because I’ve thoroughly enjoyed looking around yours ever since! Happy 2013!

Hehe, well I hope you enjoyed the daytime ball drop
It was really delicious. I think that I’ll make my new goal in life to be able to make one of those. I know, I set relatively low (but delicious) goals.
I’m really glad I found your blog, too! I love reading back through your posts about NZ. But it makes me want to go back so badly!!
Hope you’re having a great start to the new year!
